Sailing


Even if you think the seas are calm, those waves can rise up any time.  Still, as my favourite meditation man Kabat Zinn says, "you can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf."

  1. There's a parable (perhaps by Kabat Zinn and perhaps from this text) about being a swimmer in the water. You're tossed about by the churning waves with no sense of where you are or what is near you. But if you imagine being above the water on a boat, now you can get your bearings and being to navigate. I love that analogy for mindfulness as the boat that lets you pull back from the waves and just observe.
