Red Carpet roundup: 2013 Golden Globes

Top of the class

Helen Mirren you are SMOKIN'.  You should give lessons.
(Badgley Mischka Couture)

Lucy Liu - garden goddess.  I adore this.
It's so fun, so bold and so divine.
(Carolina Herrera )

Naomi Watts - glamour, glamour, glamour.
(Zac Posen)

I sort of want you at the top of the list, but how long can the top of the list really be?

Kate Hudson - I actually think this is off-the-chain good.
But I couldn't put it in the top 3, because Mirren is staking her claim.
See it in better close up here.

Jennifer Garner, looking pretty stunning really.
Also, her accessory - very aesthetically pleasing.
(Vivienne Westwood)

Honourable mentions

I mean.  These two are awesome.  I had some notes on Amy's red carpet look,
but since I love them so much I'm not going to get into detail.

Emily Blunt - a brave choice.  I normally don't like cut-outs but I think she rocked this.
(Michael Kors Resort)

Jennifer Westfeld aka Mrs John Hamm.  Bold colour, interesting structure.

Julianna Marguiles. Amazing from the front.
The sides, well let's leave that sheer mess to a different perspective.
(Naeem Khan)

Nicole Richie in a charming colour. Was this kid really in The Simple Life?
(Naeem Khan)

Julianne Moore in Tom Ford.  A strong performance.

Jessica Alba, total glamour puss and such a fresh colour.
Looks like she is carrying Elmo but you can't win 'em all.
(Oscar de la Renta)

Super interesting and elegant.  Michelle Dockery in Alexandre Vauthier.

I want to get on board with this, but I just can't

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior. So statuesque.  The colour - awesome (see above).
The breast cups - not so awesome.

Kerry Washington in Miu Miu. I want it to make sense, BUT IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.  At least not for the Globes.  It's Miu Miu and has silver, emboidery, embellishment.
But the skirt and the sheer and the hair.  I can't compute.

You've let yourself (and all of us) down

Oh Lena. You are so bloody awesome. I want so much for you.
And still, you let me down: time after time, after time.

Oh Chastain. What is up with the draping, the finish, the fit around the breast area?  It's not rocket science.  This is - "I promised I'd wear this, and I tried it on 15 minutes before the red carpet and it looked terrible, but I couldn't back out/I didn't have anything else to wear."

Thank goodness you are married to Daniel Craig.  Nothing can save you from this disaster.

Julie Bowen.  I want to cry.  I can't even have a discussion with you about how 'made by my high school best friend who thinks she's a designer' this is.

Dobrev. No.  Are you trying to be interesting?  If so, see Kate Hudson above for advice.
If not, strick to the script you incredible specimen.

This is not a cocktail party Marion. But, points for the colour.

There is nothing about this that is good.  Also, how about changing it up a little sister?

Cracked out (and not in a hot mess kinda way)

Halle Berry, from the House of Early 90s Material in a Small Town Shopping Mall.
How can such a beautiful woman with so many
stylists at her beck and call make such poor choices?

Guiliana, I can't even.

It's like these are offcuts from Julianna Marguiles's dress?

Boho meets bells meets Zorro?

Oh JLo.  It's exhausting trying to stay relevant isn't it?
Also, that white suit half will not do.

This is not an AWARDS outfit.  And it's weird, in the
weird way that can sometimes be cool.  Except this is not cool.

Leg it alone, already will you?

No.  Can we not learn from Angelina's mistakes?  Are you trying to become a meme?

And no.

I'm so bored, I might fall asleep

Nude is not your friend.  See also: Amanda Seyfried
Isla Fisher and Megan Fox did nude better.

I'm going to let this pass, but only because Hugh Dancy is your baby daddy, ok?

Meh.

Theoretically, this is good.  But I can't get excited.

Girlcrush: Emma Stone

Emma Stone at the premiere of Gangster Squad (which I sort of can't wait to see), resplendent in red and that beautiful, big statement necklace.

All good things

Loving Lanvin

via my (oldschool) blackberry

A burst of orange. So classic. Who can resist Lanvin on sale at Attic? Not my sister-in-law. Divine.

Speaking of flowers

Love these Anniel Soft shoes from Attic.  Made by ballet shoe manufacturer Anniel, they were originally "designed as shoes worn by street artists during their performances, particularly soft and suitable to the movements thanks to the special rubber sole."   I fell in love with these last summer.  You can't get these anymore at Attic, but there is a glorious new collection available here.

Blue love

Did I mention hydrangeas are my fave?

Embellishment

Oh, how I love a little embellishment.  Particularly a splash of detailed work.

Here is 2013

Regular readers slash bored Facebookers will have noticed that I have been a little absent for the last couple of months of 2012.  I was feeling a little uninspired - if you've read the About section of this blog you'd probably say that there was no better time to Devour Beauty, quite frankly.  But sometimes the soul is weary and needs a break; sometimes you can't push.

Luckily I had a gorgeous holiday break reveling in the Sydney sun with some beautiful people (and some sparkling little nieces).  And then, here we are: 2013.  May it be infinitely better than 2012.  May all of you, dear readers, have a year full of happiness and good health, of love and laughter.  But most of all, whatever you're striving for this year - don't be afraid.

Acquisitions: floral silk

via Shopbop

Everyone knows I'm a sucker for a silk tank, especially one by Joie.  This season I'm expanding my horizons to their silk summer shirts.  You can buy it online here.  Be still my beating heart, it also comes in a blazer.  You know how I dig the floral.

Coveting: YSL Vandas

via SSENSE

Coveting for Christmas these YSL silver mirrored vanda pumps available at SSENSE.  You can find the gold or anthracite versions over at Saks here, or if you prefer a pop of hot blue, here.

L'homme: Wizard of Oz

Via 00O00

If any man I know could pull off this DSquared2 green velvet silk lapel jacket, well...nothing more to say.

Art deco flats: Ivy Kirzhner

Absolutely adoring these Ivy Kirzhner flats, available here.  The collection is inspired by "the Art Deco designs so intrinsically reflective of Manhattan’s architectural grandeur."

Iridescence

" "Some of us get dipped in flat, some in satin, some in gloss..." He turned to me.  "But every once in a while, you find someone who's iridescent, and when you do, nothing will ever compare." "

Une motto: Leave it all behind

Never were truer words spoken.  One for the list.

Speaking of Michelle: Obama v Romney colour-off

First Lady of fashion: Mobama wins our votes (and hearts) too

Top 5 Mobama looks from the 2012 Campaign

Custom made Tracy Reese dress and J.Crew heels on the 1st day of the DNC.  This is far and away my favourite.  What I (and it seems all the real fashion commentators) love about this dress, is that it absolutely reflects who she is.  Read about it here and here.  I love the description from the New York Times's Eric Wilson: "From a distance, the dress had a shimmering effect, like wet paint in a blast of unreadable pastels, but in close-ups, viewers could practically study the pattern of the gold brocade."

Dresses aside, the speech she gave was brilliant - you should remind yourself how awesome she is by watching it here or reading the full transcript here

As a friend of mine posted on Facebook yesterday: "Hilary/[M]Obama 2016" - if only!

Preen at the First Debate.

Thom Browne at the Third Debate

I've not been able to find a better picture than these of Obama at a DC book signing.  But it's a killer.  Brooks Brother silk sweater with keyhole, J.Crew pencil skirt and Alexis Bittar brooch.

BCBG MAXAZARIA

And some other favourites, just for fun:

Keen observors will have noticed she recycled this Michael Kors dress, complete with black cardi (but a different brooch) for election night.  As many commentators said, this was symbolic of an entire campaign trail filled with more austere (but still fashionable) fashion choices, reflecting her husband's economic policies and a little more cognisant of the tough times many of their public were facing.

Sherbet - how on trend!

Rocking the flats with gingham.

In DVF prepping for the DNC.

In Laura Smalls - final day of the DNC

In Michael Kors at the second debate - comes in close for the top 5.
